Who We Are
The American Red Cross is the only organization mandated by Congress to respond to disasters and provide emergency communication to military families, and the only local nonprofit organization that meets the needs of disaster victims any time of the day, 365 days a year. When disasters strike, the Red Cross provides not only food, clothing and shelter, but crisis counseling for those who have lost a loved one or everything they owned. In Hawaii, we respond to disasters every 4 days. All disaster training, services, and financial assistance to victims is free. We are not a government agency and must rely on the generosity of Hawaii’s people to provide these critical services to our community.
Our Headquarters is located on Diamond Head Road in Honolulu. We also have offices on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island and service centers at Schofield Barracks, Kaneohe MCB and Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam.
What We Do
The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. The Hawaii State Chapter was founded in 1917 and has assisted victims of every major disaster in the islands' history, including the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hilo tsunami, volcanic eruptions, Big Isle earthquake, Hurricanes Iwa and Iniki, New Years & Manoa floods, Kaloko Dam burst, Sacred Falls landslide, Xerox shooting, air transportation crashes, and hostage situations. In addition to disaster response and preparedness, the Red Cross teaches lifesaving training such as such as first aid, and CPR. We also provide emergency communication to Armed Forces and their families during times of crisis.
To volunteer, please go to our website at www.redcross.org/Hawaii. We need volunteers to respond to everyday disasters like house fires and floods as well as major disasters where shelter, logistics, feeding, and disaster assessment is needed; youth to join high school Red Cross Clubs; volunteers to support military service members and their families; Human Animal Bond Program handlers and their therapy pets to visit military hospitals and veteran clinics; volunteers to install free smoke alarms and teach elderly and disabled how to escape from home fires; volunteers to teach keiki how to prepare for and cope with disasters; office workers; fundraisers; volunteer coordinators; IT help; nurses and mental health workers; and more. Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the American Red Cross.
