Summer Camp Position
Aloha and welcome to Project Hawai’i, Inc. Summer Camp on the Big Island. Our volunteer staffed nonprofit is solely supported by public donations to help the homeless children succeed. Our educational programs allow the children to grow and learn with the skills needed to succeed in school, build healthy relationships and learn team work.
Our camp is looking for a facilitator or/coordinator for our Summer Olympics day. This is ONE DAY event hosted in Hilo at a local park.
Our goal is to have the children participate in fun and silly activities as a team to "win" and have the opportunity to cheer on their team mates.
In the past the event is run with relay style games, hunt for items, etc. Typically having 5-6 different relays for the 2 hour time slot. We do have very limited resources at the park. It is an open lawn area.
Some fun/silly ideas are:
- 1. Have a team mate lie on the grass with while holding a cup on their forehead, the team mate runs across the lawn with their cup of water, has to pour the water in the cup. Then they switch places until the first team runs out of water and they are not the winners of the event. To make it super silly, the water catcher has to wear water wings, and put their head on a round inter-tube .. this too takes time to change players.
- 2. Have the team mates run to each side to transfer a hard boiled egg in a wooden or large plastic spoon, holding a small foam or rubber ball between their thighs to allow for more challenges
- 3. Dress up.. have box with assorted over sized garments, accessories, play jewelry, hats, etc. The first team mate runs to the box, puts on one item, runs back, the second player puts on player one's item, runs to get the second, and so forth. The first team to empty the box and have all the items on one person wins. Great place to get accessories is at the recycle center for free.
Obviously the games are endless to make up. The goal is to allow for the children to participate in team building skills while staying actively involved as a team. Nothing that takes an actual skill that children may not have developed yet due to their age, or some developmental disabilities.
This position will probably take a few volunteers to work together on each team. So, if you have those in mind, this is a great small group event. If not, we can also provide supportive help.
