Catholic Charities Hawaii is recruiting both English-speaking and bilingual volunteers and seniors to participate in this service. Memory Mentor volunteers provide in-home support and a social connection for people who show symptoms of memory loss, confusion or dementia, or have a diagnosis of dementia - who live alone and have little or no caregiving support.
Both male and female volunteers are urgently needed to provide Memory Mentor services island-wide on Oahu. Services are offered seven (7) days a week, excluding holidays, between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm at no cost to seniors.
Volunteers are matched with one or more seniors and visit them on a regularly scheduled basis based on the client's preferences and the volunteer's availability. It is a set schedule. Memory Mentor volunteers are responsible for: (1) visiting their assigned senior(s) on a "mutually agreed upon schedule" to provide social support and reduce loneliness, (2) optional services include grocery shopping for the senior, reviewing mail with the senior, providing reminders; and (3) providing safety checks. Visits range from 1 hour to 2 hours depending on services provided and safety checks.
You can help seniors maintain their independence and ability to live at home, provide a social connection, and reduce social isolation and loneliness. You can become a Memory Mentor.
