The annual FREE Hawaii Book and Music Festival celebrates books, reading, and all forms of storytelling and music in Hawai'i. This volunteer-lead, non-profit event depends on the help and volunteers to welcome attendees, assist with registration, manage stages, complete guest surveys, and more. The event features major authors, concerts, storytelling, panel discussions, children's activities and so much more. Come help us make this year's festival the most fun yet!

The Hawaii Book and Music Festival runs Saturday, May 6 and Sunday May 7, and morning and afternoon shifts are available. We are seeking up to 100 volunteers for many types of duties. (see below) Volunteers are also needed on Friday, May 5th from 2-6pm for stage and venue set up. Shift times are Morning: 9:00 a.m. to 1:30pm, Afternoon Shift: 1:00-5:30pm. 

Some details about volunteering:

• Volunteers receive a free T-shirt, snacks and drinks, and there is free parking. 
• The majority of volunteer activities require being on your feet for most of your shift. Please wear comfortable shoes. The Festival takes place on a grass area and may present mobility challenges for some. 
• Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. You cannot supervise children during your shift, but may join your family at the Festival before or after your shift(s).
• Volunteers may request different duties and take multiple shifts, though we ask for your flexibility in being placed the day of the Festival

VOLUNTEER DUTIES may include: 
SET UP and BREAKDOWN: Set up or remove plants on stages and help with light set up and removal, assist in the removal of boxes and light items.

MONITORING PARKING LOTS: Check in guests and performers parking in VIP lots from parking list provided and turn away anyone not on the list, assist in directing parking, and monitor parking garage for litter 

RECYCLING: Friday pick up of recycling units with pickup truck from Waipahu Incinerator, monitor recycling bins, sort recycling, and drain any fluids, remove lids from plastic bottles, coordinate the removal of donation delivery 

GROUND MAINTENANCE: Ensure the grounds are neat and tidy, organize chairs in food booth areas, keep table tops clean, and assist in picking up litter, answer questions and provide directions and be an ambassador of the festival.

INFORMATION BOOTH: Staff the information booth, sign volunteers and presenters in and out, distribute t-shirts, distribute programs and information, be the first line of contact and provide a welcoming first impression, distribute and collect surveys, and act as runners for necessary errands.

FIRST AID: Be currently certified in basic first aid and response, and be willing to be the first line of contact for First Aid, while also assisting at the Information Booth. Provide basic first aid (band-aids, antiseptic, etc) and call the proper responders for any more serious injuries.

GREEN ROOM HOSPITALITY: Maintain clean area, reset tables and chairs re-stock food and drinks, and monitor attendance. 

MISSION AUDITORIUM: Especially active and alert volunteers are needed for this role. Ensure all rules are followed for use of historic building, and be willing to strictly prohibit chewing gum, running and unruly behavior, keep times of performance and crowd lines, and provide water for singers, organize chairs and keep auditorium in pristine condition.

SATISFACTION SURVEYS: Work directly with the public at the festival to provide and collect attendee surveys upon their exit at information booth and other selected areas. 

STAGES: Monitor the stages to keep schedule on time, provide water and lei to presenters, announce presenters if no emcee is scheduled, act as runners for needed items, distribute programs to guests and answer questions, encourage survey completion and donations from guests, and tidy area between presentations.
