Strengthened by diversity, the YWCA draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women's growth, leadership and power, in order to attain a common vision: peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all people. Original founded on Kauai in 1928, and incorporated in the State of Hawaii in 1964, the YWCA of Kauai has an extensive history supporting and assisting women. The YWCA Family Violence Shelter has been providing shelter and services for abused women and children on Kauai since 1980. Services consist of a safe shelter for up to 90 days; 24 hr hotline; 24 hr crisis response team that is cross-trained in domestic violence and sexual assault issues; counseling; support groups; domestic violence education; temporary restraining order preparation and court advocacy; referrals and information on other community services; parenting support groups; and children's program services. The YWCA of Kauai Sexual Assault Treatment Program has provided services, since 1982, to children and adults who have been impacted by sexual assault or sexual abuse. The service provides 24-hour crisis intervention, treatment and legal and judicial advocacy for victims and their families. The YWCA's Domestic Violence Intervention program began offering services to the Kauai community in 1985. The program includes services to women, teens and men that struggle to act non-violently in their intimate relationships. The YWCA Youth With Sexual Behavior Problems and Sex Offender Treatment Programs, established in 1987, provide core relapse prevention therapy to juvenile and adult offenders and their families. Services include psycho-sexual assessment and evaluation, individual sessions, group treatment, family sessions and referrals for additional treatment. The YWCA of Kauai Sex Abuse Treatment Services program, since 1995, has provided services to families when incest has occurred. The program provides group, family and individual counseling. Education and skill building are emphasized to resolve the trauma experience and to prevent further abuse. Additionally, since 1938, the YWCA of Kauai has utilized its rustic Camp Sloggett facilities as a program retreat site, as well as for daily/ weekly rental use for individuals, families and groups, in tents, the cottage, the lodge or the bunkhouse.
