Mental Health Patient-Care Volunteer

Hawaii State Hospital offers a variety of patient-centered volunteer experiences. Opportunities are of interest to volunteers who already have experience or education in health or related fields - or to others with no experience but who are willing to learn about patient care for adults in a psychiatric hospital with serious mental illnesses. All positions provide opportunity to serve and support patients receiving psychiatric care at the State's adult forensic mental healthcare hospital.

Volunteers are expected to commit to at least six months of service. This allows you to get the most out of training and experience received when serving at the Hospital, and provides patients a stable patient care environment. We provide training. Volunteer scheduling is flexible to work around your busy schedule. Typically, volunteers serve weekdays between 8 AM - 8 PM, from 1 - 3 hours a week, up to a maximum of 18 hours a week.

Some recent examples of patient-care service provided by volunteers:

- Visitor or Community Transition Companion to patients in Hospital units

- Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Program Assistant

- Treatment Mall Class Assistant

- Patient Snacks & Sundry Shop Assistant (we call these shops "PIP Store" and "Greens and Beans Cafe")

- Mental Illness / Substance Abuse assistant (requires education or experience in addiction or counseling services)

- Spiritual care assistant to Hospital Chaplain

Other patient-care positions and activities become available from time to time. If you are interested in a particular activity, or would like to learn what may be available, please inquire.
