Note that all of our internships are unpaid, but provide an excellent opportunity for hands-on experience with a great organization.

Regular and Ongoing Volunteers: Providing assistance with client services or ongoing administrative support to programs, handling confidential client information. FULL TIME = 10 hours a week or more for 4 consecutive weeks. PART TIME = Less than 10 hours a week for 4 consecutive weeks

Short-Term/Event Volunteers: Providing assistance with fundraising events, short-term administrative support, and specific work projects.

All volunteers are required to participate in orientation and training sessions that relate to the programs that they will be working in before they become involved in program activities.

Please fill out the Volunteer Application, so that we will have an idea of your preference of volunteer work, types of clients or administrative support you would like to participate with and the days and hours of your availability. After we receive it, we will contact you to set up a time to meet with program staff and discuss your volunteer interests further.

Prior to volunteering within our programs, there is a credentialing process that includes: background and reference checks.  In addition, some of our programs require TB clearance, a Physical, and FBI Fingerprinting.

Hearts For Animals is expanding our board and looking for people to serve for a minimum of one year in helping to market, coordinate volunteers, grant writing, advocacy, and awareness. 

The Fair Housing Enforcement Program (FHEP) of the Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i (LASH) is seeking volunteer testers to assist in the detection of illegal housing discrimination. Testers pose as renters or home-buyers in a variety of situations and report their findings/experiences with the Test Coordinator. Hours are flexible and attention to detail and reliability are required.  Testers will be paid a per-test stipend, but this is NOT a part-time job.  Training will be provided. You must be at least 18, without prior felony convictions and without an open case with the Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i. Those with an active real estate license are not eligible.

Seeds 4 Tomorrow is seeking volunteers to help care for an organic garden used in educational field trips. Tasks include planting, weeding, harvesting and mulching this area. Garden includes common vegetable crops, canoe plants, fruit trees, and native Hawaiian plants. Family friendly and you are welcome to take home fresh produce.

Are hours of operation are M-F 6:30am-3pm. Volunteers may come at any time of their choosing during these hours.

Sunshine Preschool, a non-profit 40 year old Kailua based school is looking for volunteers to help rebuild our playground!

The rebuilding will begin on Wednesday, April 18th and conclude on Sunday, April 22nd. 

Three shifts per day are available:  Morning (8:00am-12:00pm) ★ Afternoon (12:30pm-5:00pm) ★ Evening (5:30pm-8:00pm)

★ Childcare is available on weekend for children 2-10 years and up to the first 15 children

★ Snacks and meals will be provided to volunteers after their shift

★ Letters of Appreciation will be available upon request

We are looking for volunteers for so many positions (not just building!) of all ages. Ages
10-13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times, 14-17 may work on a crew but can’t use
power tools, anyone over 18 can participate fully.

We are looking for volunteers to provide baby-sitting and child care support at parent workshops and events. 

Volunteers must have experience working with children, a current TB test, and be able to pass a background check. Certification in infant CPR also required.

Opportunities will be limited to short-term events and will not generally be recurring. Thank you for your interest!

Our Piko Pals program is looking for Volunteer Group Leaders to facilitate new parent support groups. Groups meet weekly for 12 weeks in various parks, homes, and community centers. Group size is limited to 10 participants to encourage intimacy and friendship among parents.

During each 2-hour meeting, Group Leaders lead new parents through sharing their highs and lows of the week, followed by a discussion on a relevant topic (infant feeding, sleep, emotional changes, transition back to work, etc.).

Group Leaders do not need to be parenting experts. They do, however, need to be nurturing, empathetic, and supportive of a variety of parenting styles and diverse backgrounds and cultures. Group Leaders also need to attend a 2-hour training, and have organizational skills and the ability to coordinate weekly meetings through email and text with the participants.

The Hawaii SHIP is looking for volunteers to serve seniors statewide.  Medicare is a confusing process and it is the job of the SHIP to help seniors navigate their many options by providing unbiased and free Medicare counseling.  

Certified volunteer counselors are essential to the success of the SHIP program. Other roles include information distributor, administration, exhibitor, and presenter. Without the commitment and dedication of SHIP volunteer counselors, the program would not be sustainable, and Hawaii’s beneficiaries would lose a very valuable service.

Counselor: This role involves direct discussion with beneficiaries, caregivers, and/or family members about their individual situations and may include review of personal information such as Medicare Summary Notices, billing statements, and other related financial and health documents.

      o A counselor with advanced training can develop plan comparisons for clients based on the client’s resources and situation. A complete plan comparison will provide the client with recommendations on plan options that best addresses their needs.
      o A counselor with advanced training can assist a client with a Medicare appeal, usually because a benefit was denied, but other reasons and appeals do exist. SHIP is not responsible for drafting or writing an appeal, but can advise a client on when to file an appeal, what information to include, and where to send the appeal documents.

Create interactive group games and crafts for children, ages 3-11 years old, for one of HUGS' monthly respite events. 

Each month, HUGS conducts a respite evening for seriously ill children and their siblings so that their parents can have important time for themselves to relieve the daily stresses of caring for their ill child.  It is also a time in which these children can have fun, meet other children in similar circumstances and regain their childhood.

Respite events are held in the evenings at the HUGS Center or in West Oahu locations.  Contact HUGS to find out specific dates and locations.

The HUGS Center is a place for seriously ill children and their families to gather and enjoy special program events.  Our building is over 90 years old and needs some TLC.  Repair projects include replacement of office doors and a wooden gate, painting, some carpentry work. 

Engage in a variety of administrative activities to help HUGS organize and refresh its offices and systems to serve seriously ill children and their families better.  Activities range from data entry, organizing office spaces, creating electronic documents, taking inventory of toys and activity supplies.

Host a family dinner by providing dinner for up to 14-15 individuals (including children).  Stay, have dinner, and talk story if you like.  Our families are sheltered at different congregations in the Honolulu and Windward area. This opportunity has a financial costs, so great for small groups. 

We need 1 to 2 overnight volunteers at the shelter site to sleep over in case of an emergency. 

Come in a play with our keiki and give parents a much needed break.  We highly encourage educational activities!

Healthy Hearts of Homeless Keiki Campaign- Fitness Challenge.

Project Hawai'i, Inc. is a nonprofit organization run 100% by volunteers to provide homeless children with year round services. Since we are publicly supported, we obviously need to raise funds for particular events and programs that help these children escape their cycle of poverty.

Most homeless children living in poverty have low self-esteem, limited social and life skills and definitely don't have an open opportunity to participate in school based, or extracurricular activities during their youth.

The largest obstacle these children face joining a team or sports group, etc., is due to lack of funds and supportive requirements to play or sign up.

Every year, we choose February as our month to conduct our Healthy Hearts for Homeless Keiki campaign. While this is conducted and organized in February, we do not expect all challenges to happen in February.. year round is fine.

Our goal for this program is to have an active fund that allows us to sponsor the child's needs as they arise. A typical sport can cost well over $100.00 per child. For some this is life-changing and helps the child learn so much more about themselves, values, team work, etc...

We are seeking a coordinator that would like to help coordinate and set up the program with local gyms, fitness groups, centers, etc... such as yoga, zumba, fitboxing, running, walking, stroller races... any activity that requires "fitness building" to keep with our theme of Healthy Hearts!!

I want to share a little story that was just presented to our volunteers while we were at the pumpkin patch with the homeless children. This is the reality they face in daily life, and when having to be in a public situation away from their "comfort zone" of being around other homeless people.

All the homeless children were standing in line waiting to go on a water ride at the pumpkin patch. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for them, and they all realized that fact. They were so excited and sort of forgot the fact that they are homeless and being left out of the wonders of being a child.

The line was quite long, and as they got closer to the entrance, one of the boys stepped out of line. I was so mad, and told him get back in line, you are doing this, I already paid $8. for your ticket. He stood there and said "NO", he didn't want to go. I told him not to worry what people might say, or how he felt.. no one really cares who is doing what, or what we look like, this is a world that revolves around us being happy and doing something for fun... he still refused to go. I would not let that happen and kept asking what is wrong, and why would he not go.

Finally he said, I have to take off my shoes and my socks and feet are so dirty. I am ashamed of being here and don't want people to know that I am dirty. Plus, I will get wet and these pants are dirty and they stink when they get wet. OMG... this is the reality these children face daily!! They don't participate in activities because of their lack of hygiene capabilities.

So, I took him to the restroom, helped him clean up and put him back in line. That child laughed and had so much fun.. it was truly a life changing experience for him.

With that said, I want to share what these children face in school.

Most teen girls won't go to school once a week every month because they are not prepared for that time of the month. ($30. will solve that issues). Many teens won't participate in p.e. because they don't have proper hygiene or clean underpants and don't want to change, can't shower after and feel so dirty ($13. will solve that problem)

Most boys won't join after school sports due to the fact they don't have even the basics to participate ($$$ will solve that problem)

There are so many drop outs, those who turn to drugs, or other criminal acts due to lack of SIMPLE solutions that a $20 bill can solve. We have the opportunity to make these changes in these precious lives and help them become part of society in a positive light.

This is something that can be done via social media, emails, or put together as a collection at your place of business, school, group, etc. Every penny does make a difference, and for a few dollars YOU CAN BE THE DIFFERENCE these children deserve.

We are collecting gift cards from Walmart or Target to provide to teens and allow them to purchase items they need when they need them. We are giving them the confidence they deserve to take care of their own lives. Building their self-esteem and helping them to learn to manage thier own situations of struggle.

One step further, you can set up an ongoing collection to sponsor a teen to participate in sports, or for their educational needs.

Some of our goals for 2017 are listed below.

We are trying to expand our programs and bring back our after-school reading and tuitoring programs as well as add more after-school options for these precious children. At one time, our agency had 8 centers open 5 days a week, but the economy hit, and we slowly had to close them. Some of our other programs have dimissed as well. We are hoping to make 2017 our come back year and help even more children have a brighter future.

We are also trying to expand our summer educational program and open it up to even more teens on both islands. This is our 10th year anniversary to provide a teen mentoring summer program, and we have added a TEEN WEEK on Big Island. We have also made a committment to make this year and forward to be 100% organic.

Imagine visiting an urban community with one of the highest rates of adult illiteracy on island. Now imagine entering a small library embedded in that same community whose mission is to help children improve their reading and writing skills AND make learning fun AND teach character building. The staff and volunteers of Hawaii Literacy's Family Libraries at Mayor Wright Homes and Kuhio Park dedicate their time and energy to meet these three goals because we know that when children are encouraged, supported, and shown how to enjoy learning they will become stronger students fill of confidence and curiosity and ultimately change the course of their life for the better.

But we can't do it alone. We need your help. 

Hawaii Literacy's Family Libraries are located in two public housing developments in Kalihi. We need help during afterschool hours especially from 2:30-5:30pm to tutor and teach reading and writing skills to children. Each day we service about 20 children ages 5 to 14 with varying literacy needs. We use computers, books, flash cards, songs, theatre arts, and much more to teach basic literacy skills. If you have the time, patience, and ability, please consider joining our team as we make a huge difference in the lives of Hawaii's children. Thank you for your consideration.

In today's economy is does seem that every penny counts, well it is not different for our homeless keiki programs. Throughout the year we conduct several collections and fundraisers, people can only give their extra penny's. Some apologize saying "that is all I can give" while others wish us good luck and throw in their two pennies.
Well I want to let everyone know that all those penny's really do make a difference, and have collected hundreds of dollars in penny's to help support the needs of our homeless keiki
Project Hawai'i, Inc., is a non-profit organization that runs 100% by volunteers to care for the keiki living in homeless and poverty stricken conditions on both the Big Island and O'ahu. Our goal is to be able to provide them with basic life necessities, nutritious meals and educational programs to help them escape the cycle of poverty within their own lives.
Throughout the year we conduct bi-weekly outreach and deliver supplies and then during the holidays we provide parties, gifts, and other life wonders to help them cope with the stress of being homeless. In the summer we run an award winning teen mentoring program and provide over 200 keiki with all their back to school needs.
These programs are all run 100% by public donations, so every penny really does make a difference.
So, where to do you come in? We are seeking individuals, groups, clubs, classrooms, etc to help us collect penny's to provide the keiki with their monthly basic needs.
This can be conducted in various ways, from having collections, contents, or even just a one day empty your penny's and see what we get day.
The possibilities are endless....unfortunately the donations are not.
So, if you think you would like to put together a collection, we have on line links, as well as other information to get you started.
For example, 100 penny's provides a bottle of shampoo, 50 penny's provides a healthy snack, and it only takes 1,000 penny's to provide a hygiene bag for a family, so you see how they add up...
