HELP Please....
Project Hawai’i, Inc. teen mentoring program is seeking volunteers who can assist with our Hula/Presentation workshops.
Our educational summer program for homeless teens is designed to help our teens learn the life and leadership skills they need to succeed and escape their cycle of poverty. This year we actually have an amazing opportunity for our 20th year celebration, and need someone to get our teen girls ready for their presentation to thank our donors and volunteers with a simple hula. I say simple because they need to learn this hula in a few days and many of the girls have not had the opportunity to be introduced to Hula. While some have some basic knowledge, most do not. Being raised in poverty and homelessness often leads to their lack of knowledge and experiences.
In addition, we are going to have the girls make their own ti'leaf skirts. We have set aside the day of the presentation for them to make their own skirts and finish their last practice before the performance.
We would also welcome a lei maker for the girls to make their own presentation lei.
We are seeking a volunteer with experience, but does not have to be an instructor or kumu. A student who would like to practice their teaching, or just someone who can assist. We are not looking for perfection just for our teens to have this amazing experience.
Here is the options we have open to practice Hula.
1. First Day is July 5th, 6p-8p This is the mandatory day so they have time to practice on their own
Other days to help them practice if you have time: Saturday July 8th 8a-9:30a, Monday July 10th 6-8 and the day we are making skirts July 11th from 10a-1p (you can choose a time frame)
HULA SKIRT & Lei MAKING:
July 11th we have from 10a-1p to have the 8 girls make their shirts. Their presentation is that evening.
T'i LEAF: If you can also provide the leaf, or arrange for purchase, etc. that would be amazing. I do know there are a few places that would allow for donation or purchase, I just don't have time to pick up.
Lei Maker: If you can secure the flower, I do have a small budget to purchase if needed. I am fundraising for this whole event.
And of course whomever signs up to do this with our girls can attend their presentation on July 11th /for the thank you party or at the graduation on the 27th/ to their families.
