Catholic Charities Hawaii is recruiting both English-speaking and bilingual volunteers and seniors living on Oahu to participate in this service. Services are provided island-wide on Oahu and are offered seven (7) days a week, excluding holidays, between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm.
Phone-A-Friend volunteers provide a social connection and wellness checks by telephone for homebound, low-income seniors. Volunteers are assigned to one or more seniors and make phone calls on a regularly scheduled basis. Calls usually range from 15 minutes to 60 minutes, or longer depending on safety checks.
Volunteers are responsible to (1) contact their assigned senior(s) on the "mutually agreed upon schedule," ensure that the senior(s) are able to answer the phone; (2) provide telephone social support to reduce isolation and loneliness; and (3) provide safety checks.
The program helps seniors maintain their independence and ability to live at home and reduces social isolation and loneliness.
